Nancy Carol Naughten, age 69, of Ft. Myers, FL, formerly of Mt. Prospect, IL. Beloved wife of Philip P. Naughten. Loving mother of Merideth (Paul) Kreie, Phil (Marney), Steve (Amy), and the late Brent. Devoted grandmother of Ryan, Anna, Owen, Tate, Trevor, Tyler, Kaylee. Dear sister of Marsha (Jim) Dugan, Tom (Joyce) Bogue, and Rich (Debbie) Bogue. Fond aunt of many. Preceded in death by her parents Thomas and Anna Bogue.Nancy was a former teacher at St. Raymond in Mt. Prospect, Glenview School District 34, and National Louis University.
Visitation Friday, February 15th, 9:30 A.M. until time of Funeral Mass 11:00 A.M. at St. Raymond de Penafort Church, Elmhurst Rd. (Rt. 83) at Lincoln St., Mt. Prospect. Interment St. Michael the Archangel Cemetery, Palatine.
A celebration of life will be held in Florida, date to be determined.

Nancy Naughten was an educator for more than twenty years in both elementary and middle schools before accepting a position as an instructor at National Louis University in 2003. Her passion is creating curriculum that engages and motivates students to want to learn. In her first teaching position, she was a primary reading teacher. In order to learn more ways to meet the needs of her young readers, Nancy earned her first Master’s degree in Reading at Roosevelt University.
After ten years in this position, Nancy accepted a position as an instructional specialist and reading coordinator in Glenview District 34 where she worked for twelve years. In this position she developed a true understanding of the unique educational opportunities that were necessary for teachers to provide to reach and teach young adolescents.
Springman Middle School changed from being a Junior High to a true middle school while she was working there. Springman is now a Horizon Award Middle School and an example for all schools in the area. This was a pivotal time in Nancy’s career which prompted her to earn a Master’s degree in Middle Level Education at National Louis University. Since working at National Louis, she has earned another Master’s degree as an Educational Specialist.
Nancy wrote two of the Middle Level endorsement courses for online learning which were later approved as Quality Matters Courses. Hundreds of our NLU students have earned their middle school endorsement in these courses.
Nancy enjoys teaching for so many reasons. Mostly she enjoys working with energetic new teachers and those who are coming back for the Middle School Endorsement. She agrees with Parker Palmer, author of The Courage to Teach, “After three decades of trying to learn my craft, every class comes down to this: my students and I, face to face, (or online) engaged in an ancient and exacting exchange called education. P.10” Every student and every class is unique and she tries to make sure each student experiences success while learning to meet the unique needs of young adolescents in the middle grades.
Nancy is an evaluator for the Schools to Watch Program. She has presented at many conferences including the Association of Illinois Middle Schools, Association of Middle Level Education and the International Reading Conference. Her research interests are curriculum development, 21st Century Skills, online learning and teaching, and the use of technology in the schools.

Nancy’s hobbies included Reading, journaling, walking, watching sunsets on the beach, getting together with friends, traveling, spending time with family. She had a love for dogs and meeting new people as well as a love for the outdoors and nature.
She loved her new home in Ft. Myers Florida. Taking up residency there had been a life long dream. She was welcomed with open arms in her new neighborhood, her new friends (and some lifelong friends in FL) were instrumental in her care while sick in Florida.
